Historical Context
Historical Context
In the later 1800s, North Bohemia (now Czech Republic) was one of Europe’s powerhouses for luxury decorative glass. Workshops produced glass for export to Britain, France, and the USA, combining:
- Cranberry/ruby tones (often associated with gold-based colouring, though recipes varied by factory),
- Overlay/flashing (a coloured layer over clear glass, then cut back),
- Wheel-cut decoration (including “hobnail” and lattice effects),
- Enamel painting and gilding for an opulent finish.
The arched “Gothic” paneling and dense gilding suit the Historicist/Victorian taste for richly ornamented objects that looked expensive in candlelight and in display cabinets.
