A highly decorative 19th-century mahogany fret-cut wall mirror in the Georgian Chippendale taste, featuring a shaped pierced frame, scrolling crest and apron, gilt inner slip and carved gilt plume detail to the upper section.

The mirror takes inspiration from mid-18th-century English design, particularly the elegant fretwork and Rococo scroll forms associated with Chippendale and Georgian interiors. Its warm figured mahogany veneer and aged gilding give it a rich, atmospheric character, making it a striking choice for a hallway, bedroom, drawing room or period interior.

The mirror is tall and narrow in proportion, making it especially useful above a console table, fireplace, chest of drawers or in a traditional entrance hall.

A beautiful and characterful antique wall mirror with strong Georgian revival style and excellent decorative presence.

Dimensions:
Height: 100cm
Width: 49cm

Condition: Condition is consistent with age and use. There are old splits, surface marks, veneer seams, wear to the gilding and a small veneer loss to the lower left corner. The backboard and hanging wire show age and later alteration. The mirror plate is usable and decorative. These historic imperfections add to the piece’s antique charm and are reflected in the price. Some historic worm that has been treated, and lower left corner stablised. Crest points appear to have been broken and re-attached during its lifetime.

Origin: UK

Time Period: 19th-century

Historical Context

This is a decorative 19th-century mahogany fret-cut wall mirror in the manner of mid-18th-century Georgian mirrors. The pierced scrolling outline, shaped cresting, carved gilt ornament and gilded inner slip all reference the Chippendale taste popularised by Thomas Chippendale’s The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker’s Director from 1754. These designs mixed Rococo scrollwork, Chinese-inspired fret forms and classical decorative motifs.
