A highly decorative 19th-century mahogany and gilt wall mirror in the Georgian Chippendale revival taste, featuring a dramatic pierced fretwork frame and a gilt ho-ho bird crest.

The mirror has a rich polished mahogany surface, shaped scroll and foliate openwork decoration, an aged gilt inner slip and a characterful foxed mirror plate. The gilt ho-ho bird pediment gives the piece strong Chinoiserie appeal, referencing the exotic decorative motifs popularised in 18th-century English cabinetmaking.

Perfect for a hallway, bedroom, drawing room or above a console table, this antique mirror brings warmth, history and architectural presence to a period or eclectic interior.

Historical Context

This mirror is in the style popularised by Thomas Chippendale’s “The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker’s Director”, first published in 1754. Chippendale’s designs mixed English rococo, Gothic and Chinese-inspired decoration, and pierced mahogany mirrors with scroll crestings and exotic birds became fashionable in Georgian interiors.

The ho-ho bird is a Westernised Chinoiserie version of the Chinese phoenix/fenghuang motif, symbolising elegance, prosperity and good fortune. In Britain it became a favourite decorative device on mirrors, chairs, cabinets and cornices during the 18th century.

Although the design language is mid-18th century, this example is catalogued as 19th century, so it is best described as a Victorian or 19th-century Georgian/Chippendale revival mirror, rather than an original 1760s Chippendale period piece.
