Historical Context
Historical Context
Ruby flash glass is made by applying a thin layer of ruby-coloured glass over clear glass (the ruby colour typically achieved with gold or copper compounds). Makers then etch or engrave through the ruby layer to reveal the clear glass underneath, creating crisp pale decoration.
This technique was especially popular in the late 19th to early 20th century (c. 1880–1910) across Bohemia/Austro‑Hungarian regions (today Czech Republic) as well as parts of continental Europe and Britain. Vine-and-grape motifs are classic on decanters and bottles intended for the dining table or sideboard an era when decorative glass signalled taste and hospitality.
