A handsome late 17th century English joined oak coffer, dating to around 1680–1700, richly carved and full of character. The front is decorated with three beautifully worked panels featuring lozenge motifs with central rosette flowers beneath a continuous lunette frieze. The panels are divided by barley twist muntins, a distinctive decorative feature of the period, giving the piece both texture and strong visual presence.

The chest stands on through stiles and retains a superb deep colour and patina developed over centuries of use. The hinged lid opens to reveal the original interior with its traditional till compartment to one side, used historically for storing valuables or documents. Hand-forged iron hinges and early construction details remain in place, further confirming the authenticity and age of the piece.

Originally used as a blanket or bedding chest, pieces such as this were an essential form of household storage in the late 17th century. Today they make wonderfully versatile furniture, working equally well as a coffee table, hallway bench, or decorative storage chest.

The surface has been carefully cleaned and waxed to revive the natural warmth of the oak while preserving its historic patina.

A particularly attractive and honest example of early English country furniture, offering both decorative appeal and genuine period character.

Very good antique condition with age related wear consistent with over three centuries of use, contributing to its authentic charm.
