Historical Context
Historical Context
Flow Blue was a popular Staffordshire technique from the mid/late 19th century into the early 20th: the cobalt pigment was deliberately encouraged to “flow” slightly under the glaze during firing, giving a blurred, atmospheric look that suited Aesthetic Movement / Japonisme influenced interiors. Forester’s “Phoenix Ware” lines typically aimed at the decorative market often exported as well as sold domestically offering fashionable art pottery looks at accessible prices.
Thomas Forester & Sons worked in Longton, Stoke-on-Trent (Staffordshire). The printed base mark reading “PHOENIX WARE / T. FORESTER & SONS” is consistent with late 19th to early 20th century production.
