A striking large Chinese porcelain moon flask (bianhu), richly decorated in a famille rose palette with a central panel of birds and butterflies among flowering blooms, framed by an all over scrolling floral ground. The piece is finished with twin side handles ending in moulded animal mask terminals, giving it real presence on a console, sideboard or mantel.

Moon flasks are a classic Chinese form inspired by early canteens and later celebrated in Ming and Qing decorative arts. This example is a bold, highly decorative interpretation ideal for maximalist interiors, Chinoiserie styling, or as a statement floor or tabletop vase.

Details:

  • Origin: China (bearing an iron-red Chinese inscription mark to base)
  • Style/palette: Famille rose-inspired enamels
  • Height: approx. 45 cm
  • Form: Moon flask with twin handles
  • Condition: Light display wear to base; please review photographs for condition detail.

Looks superb styled alone, or paired with lacquer, brass, rattan, dark woods, or contemporary neutral interiors for contrast.

Based on palette, outlines, overall finish, and the nature of the base inscription, this reads most convincingly as a late 20th to early 21st century Chinese decorative/export moon flask, in a revived famille rose style (rather than an 18th/19th century Qing example).

Condition: Light display wear to base; please review photographs for condition detail.

Origin: China

Time Period: Late 20th to early 21st century

Historical Context

Moon flasks (bianhu) trace back to Tang dynasty inspirations (flattened canteens influenced by Central Asian metalwork), later becoming a prized decorative form in Ming and especially Qing porcelain.

Famille rose (粉彩, “fencai”) emerged in the early 1700s (Yongzheng/Qianlong period) using opaque enamel colours, notably the pinks made possible by colloidal gold (“Cassius purple”).

In the 20th century, Chinese kilns, especially around Guangdong for export and Jingdezhen for broader production revived classic forms and palettes for the decorative market, often adding workshop inscriptions that reference place names (like Yangcheng/Canton).
